Pregnancy And Oral Health
Are you pregnant or planning to add to your family soon? While this information may not currently apply to you, many of us have friends and loved ones who may be at this stage in their lives and could use this information. It is well known that pregnancy changes the shape and appearance of a woman’s body, but did you know that it also changes the state of a woman’s oral health as well? While we know there is plenty to do before the baby arrives, we want to share some helpful tips to ensure the mom-to-be doesn’t experience a dental issue or emergency during this busy time.
Changes that occur during your body during pregnancy can change the state of your gums. The increased blood flow makes the gums more sensitive to bacteria and disease. If your gums appear red and swollen be sure to contact our office to mention your concerns as the early stages of gum disease is common during pregnancy.
It is not uncommon for pregnant mothers to experience morning sickness, or sickness during the day. While this mostly occurs during the first trimester, there are some expectant mothers who unfortunately have these symptoms during their entire pregnancy. If you vomit frequently during your pregnancy, it is important to brush your teeth as soon as possible. Stomach acid can wear away the tooth enamel, causing serious decay and can even cause teeth to appear worn.
It can be easy to eat frequently during pregnancy, and it may even be necessary, especially if you are experiencing morning sickness. Be sure to eat healthy foods and maintain a proper oral hygiene routine consisting of thoroughly brushing your teeth and using dental floss.
